Without Walls (WoW)
Part of the excitement of developing new work is the thrill of breaking with tradition, taking risks and sprinting out of your comfort zone. Honoring our mission of exploring the reaches of what theatre can be, the Playhouse is proud to announce a new program that takes theatre off the stage and on the road - Without Walls (WoW).
Supported by a generous grant from The James Irvine Foundation, WoW is a new performance series that will place cutting edge, site-specific theatre directly in the San Diego community. The Playhouse will bring acclaimed national and international theatre artists to share their ground-breaking work with San Diego, as well as commission original theatre pieces that will be inspired by San Diego communities.
Whether at a treasured landmark, a favorite community gathering spot or at your local mall, WoW performances will be intrinsically connected to the people, places and history of San Diego. Once outside the confines of theatre walls, the performers, audience and passersby become moving parts in a living theatre piece – showing that art lives in ideas and people, not within walls.

The Car Plays: San Diego
February 23 – March 4, 2012
Conceived By Paul Stein
A Without Walls Presentation
Moving Arts’ The Car Plays: San Diego, offers a series of intimate ten- minute plays, each taking place in a car, where audiences of two move from vehicle to vehicle to experience works by different playwrights. After being ushered to their seats, the car doors close and participants watch the drama, or comedy, unfold just inches away. Ten minutes later, the doors open, a seat in a new car awaits, and a fresh story begins.. In the course of an hour, five evocative stories are revealed. The Los Angeles Times raved, “The Car Plays combines the pleasures ofsite-specific theater and voyeurism — one of the better arguments forcarpooling since the high-occupancy lane. (Critic’s Choice).”
